Help Us Keep Our Health Insurance!

In June of this year, God called me and my family of six to serve at Peace Fellowship Church, a wonderful community found in Ward 7 of Washington D.C.  For those who are unfamiliar with the geography of D.C., Ward 7 is plagued by high rates of school dropouts, single parenthood, unemployment, and crime.  The median income is $30,533, less than half the median income level in the Georgetown neighborhood, and ward 7’s unemployment rate is three times the regional rate.  It is an area of D.C. that desperately needs the love of Christ, and of Christians.

But in the midst of this brokenness, Peace Fellowship stands out as an authentic and diverse church that specifically wants to care for the neighborhoods of Ward 7 and 8, so much so that the Washington Post did a feature article on our ministry.  It is a beautiful community, and it has been my honor to serve as pastor there.

But being a church in the inner city, Peace’s resources are very limited, and starting in January of 2013, they will not be able to provide for our health insurance in addition to a salary.  That means we will not have health insurance in one month, and as you can imagine, this is a critical issue given Carol’s previous history with aggressive breast cancer.  Any gap in our health coverage could potentially make it very, very difficult for our family to get insurance again…

Carol and I feel called to continue to serve at Peace Fellowship for this year, and humbly ask you to partner with us by helping us cover the costs for health insurance for 2013.  One year of basic health insurance for our family will cost nearly $20,000, so we could use any help you can offer, large or small.  Your donation would be a tremendous blessing to my family and to this church, allowing us to pursue God’s kingdom with peace of mind and freedom.  And in no small way, you would be our co-workers as we serve in this city.

Donations can be made two ways:

  • Directly through the Peace Fellowship website, at – click the “Donate” button on the left side of the screen, where you can use a credit card or Paypal account.  And right before you check out, make sure to select the “Add Special Instructions to the Seller” drop down menu and write “Health Care”.
  • Checks made out to and mailed directly to Peace Fellowship Church, 4339 Hunt Place NE, Washington D.C. 20019.  This is recommended for anyone who would like to make a larger donation, as the online donations are subject to a small processing fee.  Please write “Health Care” in the notes field.

Every dollar goes exclusively to pay health insurance costs, and your donations are tax deductible, making this a perfect time to donate before the close of the year!

Thank you so much for your friendship, your consideration, and your generosity!

Peter, Carol, Sophia, Katie, Jonathan, and Lucy Chin
